A standby person, also known as a standby man, is a qualified worker who monitors and manages a confined space and the surrounding area. Their responsibilities include: Equipment inspection: Ensuring that all equipment used in the space is functioning properly, including respiratory protection, gas detection, communication, and rescue equipment Monitoring: Keeping track of the number of people in the space and monitoring their activities to ensure safety Communication: Maintaining contact with people in the space using Radios, Hand Signals, or Horn Lights Emergency response: Initiating the rescue plan and notifying emergency services if needed Evacuation: Ordering the evacuation of the space if necessary Rescue: Supervising the rescue without entering the space and attempting to remove people using Tripods, Hoists, or Lifelines Permit enforcement: Ensuring that the confined space permit is enforced and that the control measures and rescue plan are followed Preventing unauthorized entry: Keeping unauthorized people out of the space Guiding workers: Informing workers about hazards and safety precautions and guiding them on how to work safely in the space Maintaining records: Keeping a record of who is entering and exiting the space A standby person must not leave their post without another person taking their place and personnel in the space should never be left unattended.
